FOCUS: Artist's Statement
Love is the guiding force in all of the artworks I produce.
Love of the divine spark that is “in” every one and every thing. Love of the Divine Mother that is behind all physical manifestations on the planet. Call her Shechina, Quan Yin, Isis, Shakti, Gaia, Juno, Corn Mother, Mother Mary, or The Divine Presence in feminine form. My sculptures call upon this Earth Mother to come forth in ourselves, our communities, and to all of humanity. My focus is to teach peace by expressing concepts of Goddess Energy. I cast light upon shapes I sculpt, in bronze or wood.. Shapes of corn, trees, and other things I see in nature. The shadow cast on the wall from the sculpture can fill up an interior or exterior wall space. The negative spaces between the sculpted forms are the real story tellers. Once you have trained your eyes to “read” that SPACE between the forms, you'll become more aware of the light energy of the GODDESS from the dark creative void, from which all things emanate. I am trying to create a “language of peace” by using pictographic “word sculptures” that tell a story. I suspend or inlay gems and minerals to accent and punctuate the language of these stories. These pieces are not intended to be worshiped as deities. They are only images that tell stories to contemplate. Since I am a student of culture, I draw from symbols of Kabbalistic, Tantric, Vedic, Daoistic, Animistic, realistic, surrealistic, simplistic, mystic, traditions. I am also a student of oriental internal martial arts ,Tai Chi and Chi Gong. Through breath and life-force cultivation I learn balance and harmony. Music is also a driving force in my work. If you come to my studio, you’ll hear world beat, reggae, or native music, playing. In my spare time I study, drumming on hand drums and a drum set. The drum sets the beat for the shamanic openings into that space from which my inspiration is drawn. Music helps me to center my focus. Thank you for your interest in contemporary sculptures!
